Should You Remove the Ice and Snow From Your Roof?

One of the biggest causes of premature roof replacement projects is actually a common problem during winter. When the heat from your home melts the snow on your roof, the water drains down the roof panels and into the gutters. Sometimes, however, the runoff re-freezes as it reaches the edges of your roof. This can happen multiple times over one season until the frozen water forms a barrier on your roof preventing proper water drainage. This barrier is known as an ice dam, and its effects can be damaging.

Sloped roofs are actually well-equipped to slough off excess snow from its panels. However, homeowners are still on the fence if they should help gravity take care of the snow gathering on their roofs with some proper snow removal.

Too Much Weight

Aside from ice dam formation, excess snow can also add a lot of extra weight on the structure of your roof. Sometimes, it even accumulates in your gutters, causing them to buckle under the pressure and requiring you to call for some urgent gutter repair service. Regular ice and snow removal can relieve some of the additional weight your roof has to carry all season long.

Risky Business

Like many chores that involve heights, removing slippery snow and ice from your roof has its set of risks and dangers. Moreover, adding your weight to an already heavily laden roof can exacerbate the problem. You may use a telescopic roof rake to get it done from the ground, but it may not be as effective as you need it to be.

Who Should Do It?

Many local roofing companies offer professional snow and ice removal services to help keep your roof in good shape throughout the winter. After a particularly heavy snow day, it may be best to book an appointment with them as soon as possible.
