3 Reasons to Be Cautious of Extremely Low Roofing Bids

If you are looking to replace your roof or tackle other home improvement projects like gutter repair or siding installation, you’ll want to get the best product and workmanship possible. When comparing and assessing quotes from multiple contractors, it pays to be extra careful whenever you encounter prices that are too good to be true. Here are three reasons you should be wary of extremely low roofing bids or estimates.

1. The Contractor Might Be Using Low-Quality Materials

One of the prospective contractors on your shortlist could be cutting corners on material costs. A roof built using substandard materials and components won’t stand up well to the elements and will have a shortened lifespan. When reviewing quotes, make sure to pay attention to the itemized list. Apart from the roofing materials, it should also indicate accessories, such as the underlayment, flashings and even the type of fasteners or nails, that will be used to construct your new roof. Take note of the brand names of each, too. It will tell you whether the contractor is using high-quality products or not.

2. The Contractor May Have Deliberately Underbid

Another potential reason for an extremely low bid is the contractor’s deliberate attempt at underestimating the required number of hours needed to complete the roof replacement. Since labor takes up a large portion of the overall project cost, the person may choose to provide a lower price for it to reduce the amount indicated in the estimate. Doing so, unfortunately, almost always results in poor-quality workmanship.

3. The Contractor Isn’t Experienced Enough

Less experienced contractors tend to offer lower roofing bids to attract more clients. However, the problem is that the lack of industry experience means they are more likely to commit mistakes during installation. Make sure a prospective contractor you’re looking to work with on your roofing project should not only have extensive years of experience in your local community, but also be licensed, bonded and insured for your peace of mind.
